Valentine’s Day Treats – ‘Mint’ to be Together!

vday 2015

Today was a snow day for our boys.  With 7+ inches of snow on the ground outside, we did venture to go sledding and investigating how tall the snow drifts were – which happened to be quite tall!  When we were in the house, we had fun getting ready for Valentine’s Day!  Before today, I had seen cute Valentine’s Day sayings on pinterest and tweaked one to work for what we wanted to do. The saying we liked was “We were MINT to be friends. Happy Valentine’s Day”. I thought it would be super cute with peppermints in each of the treat/pillow boxes.  So this is what we came up with:

Supplies

Circle hole puncher (I have the Recollections brand)

Color paper for the labels (we chose light brown) –  * a .pdf file is included in this blog!

Party favor vellum pillow boxes (found in a discount/cra...

Making Banana Aronia Berry Bread (+ chocolate chips) for Christmas Gifts

photo 2 (12)

Christmas Aronia b bread - Copy

My husband’s father has an aronia berry farm, and in late summer, we like to pick berries to stock up for the winter.  These berries are very high in antioxidants, so we add them to several foods including smoothies and  banana bread.  Making the bread at Christmas time has become a family tradition for us .

Here’s our recipe (it’s not a family secret!):

Banana Aronia Berry Bread  with Chocolate Chips

Ingredients

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup of aronia berries

2 eggs (lightly beaten)

3 bananas (mashed)

3/4 cup of chocolate chips (we typically use dark chocolate chips)

Preparation

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Grease and flour loaf pans (we use small loaf pans – 8 or 12 per tray).

In a large bowl, whisk to...

Thanksgiving Monsters? In Our House? YES!

Thanksgiving monsters - Copy

Don’t get me wrong, we have fall decorations around our home which include orange and white pumpkins, autumn leaf garland, etc., but our boys really like our Thanksgiving Monsters too!  Here’s how they were made:

Supplies

Wood pieces

Acrylic paint: fall colors + white

Black sharpie

Paint brushes – a few different sizes

Pencil

Possible circle stencil

Our Thanksgiving Monsters were first made by painting the wood pieces (in our case, the pieces were scraps left over from home projects) in fall colors – we chose orange, gray, and a light tan. The next step after the paint dried was penciling googlie eyes (if unsure about making a great looking circle, you could use a circle stencil), mouth, and teeth, and then we painted those areas with white paint...

Delicious Halloween Bats, Anyone?

Bat treats - Copy

So I had this idea of making a Halloween treat for the boys and they happen to LOVE bats!  It was a quick and easy project to do and get the boys excited for Halloween with their favorite character!

Here’s what I did:

Supplies

Marshmallow

Chocolate Candy Melts

lollipop stick

Sparkle Gel ( I used orange and red)

Oreo (cut in half and then trimmed)

Chocolate frosting

Wax paper

First, melt the candy melts in the microwave and once it cools just a little afterwards, cover the marshmallows and place onto wax paper.  I then placed them in the refrigerator to really speed up the cooling process. Once the marshmallows were cool, I positioned my half cut and trimmed oreo (which I cut while the marshmallows were cooling) on the sides of the marshmallow...

Painting Pumpkins!

pumpkin painting - Copy

The boys had a great time painting pumpkins a few weeks ago.  Instead of painting in the basement, we brought everything outside. We didn’t want to miss a single minute of beautiful weather,  AND it was so easy to clean! :)

One this day,  I loved having no guidelines – letting the boys create the pumpkins as they wanted to. I loved their concentration and dedication to painting the pumpkins carefully with acrylic paints.  Here’s a few photos from this time:

5th Birthday – Gadgeteer Style!

Our youngest son LOVES gadgets.  All kinds of gadgets – keys, locks, paper clips, clothes pins, etc!  He will tinker with all of these things!  So, it was no surprise to have a gadget themed birthday party! Here’s what we did:

002

 Invitations

I wanted the invites to be fun, playful, and let everyone know all attending kids would get to work with gadgets.  It was also nice to incorporate his photo in the invite!

Happy St. Pat’s Day!

008

Hello on this fabulous holiday called St. Patrick’s Day! We recently helped our 1st grader with his leprechaun trap for a school project.  Here’s what we used:

Supplies

Oatmeal container

foam board (for the base)

Colorful popsicle sticks

construction paper – black & gold

poster board paper – green

plastic wrap

gold spray paint

rocks

tape

Exacto knife (for adults!)

Scissors

Goop glue

We first spray painted an assortment of rocks from our driveway and let the rocks dry.

While the rocks were drying, we covered an empty oatmeal container with green poster board and taped the ends together.  We then cut with scissors black and gold construction paper in the size we needed to look like it was apart of a leprechaun’s hat and secured with tape...

An ‘Out of This World’ Valentine

vday 2014

I love homemade valentines.  Let me rephrase this: I love easy, inexpensive homemade valentines.  This year, I thought it would be fun for the boys to make space themed valentines – and ones that did not include food or sugary treats for those kiddos with food allergies…and to avoid being just plain hyper!

So, here’s what we came up with:

Supplies

Small bouncy balls (we bought ours online from Oriental Trading Company)

Black foam core (from any craft or discount store)

Exacto knife (for adults!)

Silver glitter glue

Silver sharpie pen

Decorative paper (we chose red)

Labels for the decorative paper (included in this blog post!)

Decorative scissors

Glue stick

Silver colored pencil

I first did some prep work before I had the boys help with the valentines...

Valentine’s Day – Sneak Preview!

I’m not sure where January went to?  This month has been crazy busy…and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.  Just like past years, we are making homemade valentines to give to classmates – and the kind that has no food or sugary sweets.  This is just a sneak preview – I’ll be posting how we made these in the next few days! :)
